Is it enough just to cover your medical bills?

Home » Car Accidents » Is it enough just to cover your medical bills?

In many cases, when you’ve suffered an injury due to someone else’s negligence, you can then sue them to seek financial compensation. If another driver caused a car accident or a property owner caused a slip-and-fall accident, for example, you may need compensation for the medical bills that you incurred as a result.

But does this go far enough? Not always. There are a few other areas you want to consider.

Any additional medical costs

For one thing, the medical bills that you get in the days or weeks following the accident may not be the only ones that you face. You could need additional treatment in the future. You may need in-home care if you have a serious injury. It’s critical to look at the long-term costs as well.

Changes to your earnings

There are two areas to think about when looking at how an injury can impact your ability to earn. First of all, if it keeps you out of work, you may be able to seek compensation for lost wages. Secondly, if it reduces your earning capacity long-term, you may also deserve compensation for this reduction.

The experience itself

Finally, remember that the experience of being injured can be traumatic. Some people develop post-traumatic stress disorder. Others have to deal with significant pain and suffering or emotional trauma. You may be able to seek compensation that goes beyond the strict financial cost you’re facing and also covers some of these more intangible areas.

It’s important to know exactly what compensation you deserve after an injury and what legal steps to take at this time.
